Teachers in the Early Years Phase of Learning ensure all students are provided with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge through both the formal curriculum, which includes the planned, taught and assessed learning of the students, and the informal curriculum, inherent in the relationships, interactions, practices, processes, systems and structures that surround learning. The development of literacy and numeracy skills is foundational to all learning and the achievement and progress of all students is tracked and monitored in these areas with ongoing communication between teachers, support teachers and parents. As a learner-centred College, the changing needs of students at different stages in their development are catered for effectively.

Junior Years: Years 4-6

The Junior Years of schooling at Southern Cross Catholic College allow students to build on their relationships with friends, staff and students from the three campuses. Academically the students are challenged to expand their skills and knowledge whilst staff are there to nurture individual abilities and foster educational success. As their confidence and talents grow students in the Junior Years are presented with opportunities to represent the College at swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals as well as academic competitions, instrumental concerts and Dance Fever training and competitions._

Middle Years: Years 7-9

A dynamic curriculum has been created to engage and challenge student perceptions, perspectives and opinions. The curriculum framework consists of four worlds – personal, environmental, technological and social. The delivery of the curriculum takes into account contemporary research and pedagogy and reflects best Middle Years practices. In Year 9 students and respective staff embark on a journey of discovery – The Damascus Program incorporating a series of on-campus and off-campus activities which address such issues as spirituality, environmental stewardship, urban awareness, team building, body image and fitness. The emphasis throughout the Middle Years is to impart lifelong independent learning skills that will prepare students for the Senior Phase of Learning.

As students progress through Years 11 and 12 they are regularly assessed in each of their subjects, with assessment monitored by the QCAA and at the end of Year 12 the Authority issues a Student Education Profile. In the Vocational Education Course, students have the opportunity to work one day per week in a school-based Traineeship or an Apprenticeship, or, to attend a TAFE course or to do structured Work Placement or Work Experience in a Vocational area of their choosing.
