Your personal brand is how you present yourself to the world. It’s your reputation. It’s up to you if you want to influence that. Regardless of whether you are destined for the world stage or a science lab, defining your personal brand will help you get to where you want to be.
“Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.” Oscar Wilde was well ahead of the game with this great reminder. This is where you begin to build your personal brand and carefully consider who you are. It’s so much more than a logo. It’s your voice and your style.
All great brands, whether celebrity or not, have some essentials in common. They are refreshingly real, genuine and true. But they don’t happen overnight. It’s a process that takes consistent action. You start to build these foundations through four key elements. Here they are.
Your values aren’t things you need to tell people about. People see your values by the way you behave. Why get clear on your values? Because when you have a clear set of values, decisions become easier to make. Your values are what you hold important. They are your benchmarks in life. Ask yourself ‘what do I stand for?’ and go from there.
We are talking about more than just the latest look or styling an outfit here. It’s about how you express yourself as an individual. Finding your flow and your style. It’s not about getting it perfect. Wear what makes you feel awesome and confident. If you feel good, you look good.
Your online life is your digital footprint and it leaves traces of you wherever you go. Whether that’s watching a You Tube video or buying something on Amazon, liking or commenting on social media, it all helps to complete the picture of you. Is the online you consistent with the offline, in person you? Practice what you post and keep it consistent and real.
A simple question but one many of us don’t dwell on long enough to genuinely discover the answer. You need to know the answer to this question. If you’re not sure yet, ask yourself ‘who do I want to be?’ We are all on this journey and becoming that person is as important a step as being that person.
Bring it all together and align your actions with your values. Keep it consistent, honest and real. Build on your strengths and be fearlessly you. Don’t hold back from sharing your story. This is the part that differentiates you. It’s also the part that people connect with and love to hear.
So you see, personal branding is not just a marketing buzzword. The personal branding process is as much about self-discovery as it is about communicating your individuality.
