Hand sanitiser a poisoning risk

May 2009
What's news May/June

Many mums carry hand sanitiser in their nappy bag, but did you know that a typical hand sanitiser contains around 60% alcohol? This means even a small amount could be enough to make a small child drunk or ill.

While hand sanitisers are great at reducing the spread of gastrointestinal and other infections when used properly, there is a risk involved. The Queensland Poisons Information Centre has already taken around 80 calls on poisoning due to hand sanitiser this year, and agrees parents should be vigilant and supervise the use of hand sanitisers by their children to ensure they are used as directed.
