New children's hospital a step closer

Queensland's new $1.1 billion single children's hospital to be based in South Brisbane is a step closer with the first major stage of construction underway. On track to open progressively from 2011, the Queensland Children’s Hospital will increase the number of beds available to children, offer expanded and enhanced clinical services and provide a new 12-bed neo-natal intensive care unit.

Surrogacy gives fresh hope

By the end of the year, new laws will be in place allowing Queenslanders unable to conceive a child of their own fresh hope of starting a family. Queensland is currently the only state in Australia where all forms of surrogacy are illegal, with potential parents facing possible jail sentences or fines of up to $10,000. For the first time, the new laws will allow ‘altruistic surrogacy’ - where a woman agrees to bear a child for another person for no financial gain or personal benefit. Surrogacy for the purposes of making money will remain illegal in Queensland.

Welcome new team member

On April 30, at Selangor
Private Hospital, Nambour, The team at Kids on the Coast welcomed a new team member. Saskia Margriet de Ruijter de Wildt arrived in much style at 2.10pm. She weighed eight pounds two ounces and measured 50cm. Both mum and baby are doing well, and dad, Gijs and big sister Ruby are over the moon.

Experts recommend tougher pool safety laws

An independent panel has recommended a single set of fencing laws for all pools, compulsory inspections and tougher rules for portable pools as part of the most comprehensive review of Queensland's pool safety laws in almost 20 years. While drownings have halved since 1991 when Queensland introduced some of Australia's toughest rules, 18 children have still drowned in private pools across the state in the last three years.
