A few of us at Kids on the Coast have kids with winter birthdays. We were chatting about how it can be a tricky time of year to host a party and so we started asking on our facebook page for some winter party ideas. ‘Like’ our facebook page so you can be part of our discussions. Fun and party games

Mar 2011

By Belinda Hopper

Kids really know how to have fun, don’t they? That’s the beauty of the backyard birthday party—some friends, some yummy food, a cake, a few games, and they’re happy. A couple of things I’ve learnt in my years of throwing kids’ parties are; a quick game’s a good game, and you always need to prepare more games than you think you’ll need. I had a running list written out for one party (a tip I gleaned from a super organised friend), only to find I had been through the whole list of games twenty minutes into a 2 hour party!

Birthday cake triumphs...and disasters!

Dec 2010

Let’s face it, some birthday party memories are better than others! Birthday cakes can turn out fabulously or flop disastrously, but chances are the kids will still happily eat them up regardless. A family affair: marriage with kids

Aug 2010

Maybe you can still remember when you were little and your own dad tucked you back into bed after a nightmare or read to you in that precious free-time at the end of a busy day.

Mother’s Day fast approaches

by Cindy Mayes

Mother’s Day… that one special day of the year where mums are (supposedly) rewarded for all the love and care they have distributed to their families over the previous 12 months. Feeding, cleaning and cuddling children on demand will be more than enough to guarantee a homemade card, right?  Read more

School Christmas

Oct 2009
by Mariel Dawson

The last few weeks of school are often the most exhilarating time of year for kids. The school year is drawing to an end and the countdown to Christmas has begun. Before children say goodbye to their friends and embark on the long summer holidays, the final few weeks of school are dedicated to sharing the excitement of Christmas with peers. Kids learn that Christmas is a time of giving, so at many Australian schools it is tradition to hand out small gifts to friends and teachers.

Vegetarian party food made easy

by Sandra Smith

Sausage rolls and snags are a familiar sight at kids’ parties, but times are changing and there’s no need to avoid holding a party if you are vegetarian. A few simple, well-presented food choices will tempt both vegetarians and non-vegetarians and you’ll be surprised at what fussy eaters will try when their mums aren’t around. If your family is vegetarian, you may decide on a party menu that avoids all meat products but, even if you’re meat eaters, there’s a good chance you will host some vegetarian guests and it’s a good idea to be prepared.
