When we were kids, our rather large brood spent many a Christmas holiday sweltering in a tent located at the daggy end of a coastal caravan park. I had memories of spending many hours packing, unpacking, setting up a tent, dealing with leaking air mattresses and spending an uncomfortable week sleeping much closer to the ground than I would prefer. Throw in a few (literally) freezing nights on a school camp, which was so bad I still get the horrors at the mere mention of that location more than twenty years later, plus a slight paranoia about snakes and spiders, and you'll see why I wasn't exactly itching to get back to nature.

Last November, my wife Alison and I and our sons George and Harry, then 7 and 6, were on holidays visiting family in the UK. As a surprise, I had pre-purchased four return air tickets to a very special destination. Flying with Finnair out of London's Heathrow Airport, we changed planes at Finland's capital, Helsinki, and after another 1.5 hours landed in the town of Rovaniemi, gateway to the Lapland region, and the official home of Santa Claus.
