‘Twas a South Bank Christmas story
This Christmas, South Bank will be home to the modern Australian Christmas story, with a program bursting with festive season frivolity.
For the twelve days of Christmas – 13–24 December 2012 – at various locations around the Parklands, the quintessential Queensland Christmas will be celebrated through a range of activities like beach cinema, storytelling under the trees, music on the lawns and a giant sandcastle depicting a typical Australian Christmas scene.
Known as Sugarplums and Possum Chums – A South Bank Christmas, the program will transform the Parklands, Little Stanley lawns and Streets Beach into a magical Christmas wonderland.
“South Bank is the perfect place to really enjoy quality time this year and create your own Christmas story with family or friends,” said South Bank Corporation CEO, Jeff Weigh.
“From dinner and drinks with friends at one of our excellent dining precincts to enjoying a quiet book or a rousing performance – Christmas in the Parklands, South Bank has never been more entertaining.”
South Bank Corporation has partnered with State Library of Queensland to produce an engaging program that celebrates the joy of Christmas through storytelling, play and song.
“This is the first time that SLQ has partnered with South Bank Corporation to deliver a Christmas program and it is the perfect finale to the National Year of Reading,” said State Librarian Janette Wright.
“Yuletide Story Garden will give children and families a taste of State Library’s fun and free learning activities offered all year round. We are excited to partner with South Bank Corporation for this festive season.”
Join Tricko, the cheeky possum and the Yuletide Poets in the Yuletide Story Garden as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas is turned on its head through an irreverent, theatrical interpretation of the classic poem.
Annual favourite, Murri Christmas will also head to the Yuletide Story Garden for a special one-off performance on 13 December to begin the collaboration between South Bank Corporation, State Library of Queensland and a whole host of local performers and storytellers.
For older audiences, the Mistletoe and Melodies Lawn Party, complete with acoustic music and quirky lawn games, will be a fun and festive place to unwind before or after a Christmas tipple and nibble across the street at Little Stanley.
