Kids still getting the cane

04-Sep-2011

Revelations that corporal punishment is still being used in some Queensland schools has renewed calls for a complete countrywide ban. Corporal punishment is banned in all state schools in Queensland but a small number of private schools still administering it say it is an effective discipline policy, is supported by parents and is about care rather than intimidation. Child welfare advocates say it is a breach of human dignity and children should not be deliberately hurt at school. Corporal punishment was banned in state schools in 1995 and is not used in the Catholic sector.
